The babies are here!

While Grandma Louise paced the railing and Sherman followed her, Ms. Gray (who elected not to have her photo taken until after she's lost the pregnancy weight) had her first (and only) batch of kittens.

We were concerned about the delivery as it took Ms. Gray many hours to deliver the four babies. At one point labor stopped. I worried about the babies who weren't delivered yet and poor Ms. Gray's eyes had rolled back into her head. One of the first two babies was still-born. But the other one was healthy as could be (and actually a pretty large size, given how small Ms. Gray is). Finally, at some point during the dead of night, Ms. Gray delivered two more healthy babies.

She's quite the professional - delivering them in the office chair in the garage. She will have to move them though - the chair isn't very big and when they roam around looking for her they could easily fall off the chair. And that happened this morning. When I went to check on them, I discovered First Born mewling on the floor.

Life isn't easy out here for kittens. There are a lot of predators - coyotes, a mountain lion, raccoons, bobcats, feral cats, feral pigs...fortunately Humphrey (our other great pyr) is a very good guardian.

Here are the first pics:
